Familie, Bildung und Freizeit is the family-life theme of the DTZ: letters from school and Kita, class trips, courses, outings and leisure offers. Its signature text is the Elternbrief, the letter from school to parents, which any parent in Germany must be able to read accurately, when does the trip start, what must my child bring, what does it cost, what happens if it rains. Around it sit museum and zoo notices, library events and travel offers, each hiding one price, one time or one rule that becomes the question.

Two practice Elternbriefe carry the theme's core patterns. The Wandertag letter announces a class walking trip on Donnerstag, dem 15. September: meet um 8 Uhr in front of the school, back around 15 Uhr, please give your child sturdy shoes, a jacket and enough food and drink, a phone is not necessary, and „bei starkem Regen fällt der Ausflug aus", in heavy rain the trip is cancelled. Questions pick one fact at a time, the meeting time being the favourite, and the distractors are the other times in the letter, so a reader who merely remembers "8" and "15" without attaching them to "meet" and "return" will stumble. The Klassenfahrt letter scales the same pattern up to a residential trip: three days at a youth hostel, insgesamt 90 Euro pro Kind, and, crucially, an explicit list of what the price includes, the bus, the overnight stays and all meals, with Taschengeld (pocket money) explicitly extra. The included-versus-extra distinction is the testable heart of the letter: the question asks for the total cost or for what the 90 Euro covers, and the wrong options are smaller numbers from the text or items the letter placed outside the price. Learn to draw that line and every trip letter becomes easy.
The leisure texts drill the same skill with public venues. The zoo's Familientag offer prices a Familienkarte for two adults and two children at nur 20 Euro statt 30 Euro on the event day, with a programme for children from 11 to 16 Uhr, so the question can target the discounted price, the normal price or the time window, and all three numbers wait in the options. The museum notice is the densest text in the theme: open Mittwoch bis Sonntag from 10 to 18 Uhr, closed Monday and Tuesday, entry 8 Euro, reduced 5 Euro for students and pensioners, free for everyone on Friday afternoon ab 14 Uhr, cloakroom free, and „Fotos ohne Blitz sind erlaubt", photos without flash are allowed. That last rule is a beautiful example of how the DTZ tests precision: the question asks what is permitted, and the nearly-identical wrong option, photos with flash, is exactly what the notice forbids. The library notice rounds off the set with a fully free offer: a story afternoon for children aged 4 to 8, every last Friday of the month at 16 Uhr, lasting about an hour, kostenlos, while parents browse or have a coffee. The question asks what it costs, and "nothing, it is free" must beat invented small fees. Across the theme, prices, dates and permissions are the currency; read them against the exact wording and the marks follow.

An Elternbrief is a letter from school or Kita to parents, and it is the signature text of this theme because parents in Germany must read them accurately: meeting times, costs, packing lists and cancellation rules. The practice letters announce a Wandertag and a Klassenfahrt, and each question targets one such fact.
The letter prices the three-day trip at 90 Euro per child and states what that covers: the bus journey, the overnight stays and all meals. Taschengeld for drinks and small purchases is explicitly extra. Questions test either the total or the included-versus-extra line, with smaller numbers from the text as distractors.
By stacking near-identical options: the museum allows photos without flash, and the wrong option offers photos with flash; the zoo's 20 Euro family ticket sits next to the normal 30 Euro price; the free Friday entry applies only from 14 Uhr. The tasks reward checking the exact wording, not the general impression.
