DTZ Practice Questions: Arbeit und Beruf (Work and Job Texts, A2-B1)

Arbeit und Beruf is the working-life theme of the DTZ: job advertisements (Stellenanzeigen), notices at the workplace, appointment changes and communication with colleagues and the boss. The reading tasks in this theme are built from the texts you actually meet in a German workplace, a part-time job ad, a canteen notice about new opening hours, an email asking you to swap a shift, a holiday rota, a reference letter. Each question asks you to find one concrete fact: which days you would work, by when you must reply, who to tell about a change.

Reading job ads and workplace notices

The Stellenanzeige is the signature text of this theme, and it packs a lot of testable facts into a few lines. A typical practice ad seeks a Küchenhilfe in Teilzeit for 20 hours a week, working Dienstag bis Samstag from 16 Uhr, and adds the two phrases every candidate should know: „Erfahrung ist nicht nötig" (no experience needed) and „wir arbeiten Sie ein" (we will train you on the job). Questions then probe exactly the details that decide whether the job suits someone: the days, the hours, whether training or experience is required. Workplace notices (Aushänge) work the same way with times and dates. One practice notice announces that the canteen serves warm lunch only from 11.30 to 13.30 Uhr from a given Monday, with only coffee, cake and sandwiches afterwards; the question asks until when warm food is available. A holiday rota (Urlaubsplan) adds names and rules: at most two people free at the same time, and changes reported to a named person by Friday. The skill being drilled is scanning: find the one line that answers the question and do not be distracted by the other numbers in the text.

  • Stellenanzeige: check days, hours, Teilzeit or not, and whether Erfahrung is required.
  • Aushang: almost always a time or date question, read the numbers twice.
  • Urlaubsplan: who is away when, and who you must inform about changes.

Emails from the boss and the Arbeitszeugnis

Work emails in this theme come in two recurring flavours. The first is the practical request: the boss writes that a colleague is ill and asks whether you can work Mittwoch statt Donnerstag, with an explicit deadline, „Bitte antworten Sie mir bis morgen Abend". The question then targets the deadline or the requested change, so train yourself to underline every „bis" phrase you meet. The second flavour is the application answer: a company thanks Herr Demir for the interview, tells him they chose another person, and adds that they will keep his documents for future positions, „Wir behalten Ihre Bewerbung gern für spätere Stellen". Understanding that sentence, a polite rejection that still leaves a door open, is exactly the level of reading the DTZ wants. The third recurring text is the Arbeitszeugnis, the German reference letter, which states the job title (Verkäuferin), the employment dates, and the key phrase „verlässt die Firma auf eigenen Wunsch", meaning the employee left by her own choice. Questions ask what job the person did, how long she worked, or why she is leaving, and the wrong options are plausible jobs or reasons that simply are not in the text.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does the Arbeit und Beruf theme cover in the DTZ?

It covers job ads, the workplace, appointments and communication at work: reading a Stellenanzeige, understanding a notice about canteen or shift changes, replying to an email from the boss, checking a holiday rota, and understanding an Arbeitszeugnis. These are the working-life texts the integration course curriculum is built around.

What does „Erfahrung ist nicht nötig, wir arbeiten Sie ein" mean in a job ad?

It means no experience is needed and the employer will train you on the job. This phrase pair appears in our practice ads because it decides a classic question: what applies to this position? The wrong options claim you need qualifications or must work different hours than the ad states, so always check the ad's exact wording.

What is an Arbeitszeugnis, and how is it tested?

An Arbeitszeugnis is a written reference from an employer. The practice tasks give a short extract stating the job title, the employment dates and a phrase such as „verlässt die Firma auf eigenen Wunsch" (is leaving at her own wish). The question asks for one of those facts, and the distractors are jobs or reasons that never appear in the text.

Are these real DTZ exam questions?

No. The official DTZ materials are copyright-protected and are not reproduced anywhere on this site or in the app. Every task is original, written by RiverMap Learning to match the publicly documented DTZ format and level, with an explanation in German and English for every answer.

How does practising this theme help with the DTZ letter and speaking test?

The DTZ recycles the same everyday situations across skills. The vocabulary you meet here, Teilzeit, Termin, absagen, Bescheid sagen, comes straight back in the writing section, where a typical letter concerns work or an appointment, and in the speaking test, where talking about your work and plans is a standard subject.
