One flyer offers a kilo of regional apples for 1,49 Euro statt 2,29 Euro; another prices 500 grams of coffee at 3,99 Euro statt 5,49 Euro. The one word doing the work is „statt" (instead of): the first number is the offer price, the second the normal price, and the classic wrong answer is picking the number after „statt". The fine print carries its own questions: offers run only on stated days, only „solange der Vorrat reicht" (while stocks last), and normal prices return afterwards. The private Kleinanzeige adds the second-hand market's vocabulary: a bicycle for 120 Euro where „der Preis ist Verhandlungssache", meaning the price can be discussed, collection only in Bremen with no shipping, and, because it is a private sale, no Garantie. The question tests the phrase itself: what does Verhandlungssache mean? The options that call the price fixed, free or rising are all contradicted by that single idiom, which is exactly the vocabulary-in-context skill this theme drills.
The contract half of the theme lives in customer letters. The online-shop email confirms Herr Nowak's Widerruf, his cancellation of an order: he may send the shoes back innerhalb von 14 Tagen, the shop pays the return postage (Rückporto), he should put the return label in the parcel, and the full purchase price is refunded once the goods arrive. Questions probe the allocation of duties: who pays the return postage? The correct answer is the shop, and the distractors, the customer himself, the post office, nobody, test whether you tracked who does what in the text. The utility letter is the other staple: please report your Zählerstand (meter reading) by 5 February, most easily online; if you report nothing, the company estimates (schätzt) your consumption, and an estimate is often inaccurate and can lead to a Nachzahlung, an additional payment. The question asks what the customer should do, and the plausible-sounding alternatives, pay the bill, cancel the contract, book an appointment, are all actions the letter never requests. Together these texts train the reading habit German consumer life rewards: find the deadline, find the duty, and find whose duty it is.

It means "instead of": the price before „statt" is the current offer, the one after it is the normal price. In the practice flyers, apples cost 1,49 Euro statt 2,29 Euro and coffee 3,99 Euro statt 5,49 Euro. The questions put every number from the text among the options, so anchoring which side of „statt" is the offer is the whole skill.
It means the price can be discussed, you may negotiate. In the practice small ad, a bicycle is offered for 120 Euro with this phrase, sold privately with no Garantie and collection only. The question tests the idiom directly, and the wrong options claim the price is completely fixed, that the bike is free, or that the price will rise.
The online shop does. The practice email confirms the customer's Widerruf, gives him 14 days to send the shoes back, states „Das Rückporto zahlen wir", asks him to put the return label in the parcel, and promises a full refund once the goods arrive. The question checks whether you tracked who carries which duty.
The utility company estimates your consumption, and the letter warns that an estimate is often inaccurate and can lead to a Nachzahlung, an additional payment. The requested action is simply to report the meter reading by the stated date, most easily online, which is what the question asks for.
