Electrical principles, maths and components

Element 3 begins with the vocabulary of electricity, and precision matters. The watt is the basic unit of electrical power, energy stored in an electrostatic field is measured in joules, and the simple product of an AC voltmeter reading and an AC ammeter reading is apparent power, expressed in volt-amperes, because that product ignores the phase angle that true power depends on. The maths questions are mostly Ohm's law in disguise: the correct forms are I equals E divided by R, E equals I times R, and R equals E divided by R, so a choice written as I equals R divided by E is the incorrect one. Expect to size a series resistor for a meter movement, for example a 50 microamp movement needing 4 megohms to read full scale at 200 volts. On the components side, the photoconductive effect is the increased conductivity of an illuminated semiconductor, seen in practice as a change in the material's resistance when light shines on it, which is the principle behind light-sensing parts.

Circuits, digital logic and amplifiers

The circuits questions reward a feel for resonance. In both a series and a parallel R-L-C circuit at resonance the inductive and capacitive reactances are equal and opposite and cancel, so the impedance is approximately equal to the circuit resistance, at a minimum for the series case and a maximum for the parallel case. Amplifier classes are a favourite: a Class A stage conducts over the entire 360 degrees of the signal cycle and never reaches cutoff, which makes it the most linear and least distorting, while Class B conducts about 180 degrees, Class AB more than 180 but less than 360, and Class C in brief pulses of far less than 180 degrees.

A communications receiver's sensitivity is ultimately limited by its own noise floor, because a wanted signal must rise above that internally generated noise to be recovered. Desensitizing is the specific term for a loss of sensitivity caused by a strong signal on a nearby frequency overloading the front end, distinct from intermodulation or simple overloading. In FM work the deviation ratio is the maximum carrier frequency deviation divided by the highest audio modulating frequency, so a plus or minus 5 kHz deviation with a 3 kHz modulation rate gives a ratio of about 1.66. Power sources bring a safety point that recurs throughout the pool: charging a lead-acid battery electrolyses water and releases hydrogen gas, which is explosive in air and is the real hazard to people. Battery sizing questions are practical too, such as finding that a 29.5 amp continuous load over 6 hours needs a 177 ampere-hour battery.

Antennas, aircraft, radar, satellite and RF safety

The back half of Element 3 samples the specialised services the licence authorises. On feed lines, a detuned antenna coupler creates an impedance mismatch that raises the standing wave ratio, and knowing an antenna's radiation resistance matters because it lets you match impedances for maximum power transfer. Aircraft Distance Measuring Equipment operates from 962 MHz to 1213 MHz and reports slant range, the straight-line distance to the ground station. Marine pulse radar typically fires 500 to 2,000 pulses per second, and each nautical mile of target distance adds about 12.346 microseconds of round-trip echo time. Marine VHF channels are spaced 25 kHz apart, with Channel 16 for distress and calling and Channel 70 reserved for Digital Selective Calling. The Iridium satellite system orbits at about 485 miles, works in the 1616 to 1626 MHz band and carries digital voice and data at 2.4 kbps. Safety closes the pool: RF exposure is averaged over 6 minutes in controlled environments and 30 minutes in uncontrolled ones, and RF heating can promote cataracts because the eye lens has poor blood flow to carry heat away.
