How is the Integrationsprüfung B1 structured?

The language part, the Deutsch-Test für Österreich, tests four skills. Hören (listening) has 20 questions across four parts, built on announcements, radio messages and dialogues. Lesen (reading) has 25 questions across five parts, from short notices and adverts to longer texts and a gap-fill letter. Schreiben (writing) is one longer text, and you choose between topic A and topic B. Sprechen (speaking) has three parts and is taken as a pair exam: introducing yourself, talking about experience, and planning something together with your partner. On top of the language part sits the Werte- und Orientierungswissen, 18 multiple-choice questions about Austrian values and everyday orientation. Unlike a school test, the DTÖ is not marked with a single percentage: each part is scored in points and mapped to a CEFR band, A2 or B1, which is why understanding the scoring is the first real step of preparation.

How is the exam scored, and what exactly counts as a pass?

The scaled-band scoring is the part most candidates find confusing, so learn it early. Hören and Lesen are counted together out of 45 points, and 33 or more points reaches B1. Schreiben is scored out of 20 points, with B1 from 15. Sprechen is scored out of 100 points, with B1 from 75. The B1 pass rule then combines the bands: the Sprechen part must reach B1, and additionally at least one of the combined Hören/Lesen score or the Schreiben score must reach B1. You do not need B1 in all four skills, which changes how you should prioritise: speaking is non-negotiable, and you can lean on your stronger written or aural skill for the second B1 band. The Werte- und Orientierungswissen is passed separately: 18 questions worth 45 points in total, with 25 points needed to pass. Questions 1 to 9 offer two answer options and are worth 2 points each; questions 10 to 18 offer three options and are worth 3 points each. The Integrationsprüfung B1 is administered in German, and there is no translated version of the real paper. That is why the practice questions on these pages stay in German: reading them in exam-style wording trains two things at once, the everyday facts and the B1 vocabulary, words like Ordination, Meldezettel, Kaution and Überweisung, which recur throughout the exam themes. Many of them are specifically Austrian words that learners who studied German elsewhere have never met, so meeting them before exam day is half the battle. Who needs the Integrationsprüfung B1, and by when?

Unlike the A2 exam, which fulfils Modul 1 of the Integrationsvereinbarung and usually carries a two-year deadline, the B1 exam is not mandatory for every residence permit. Passing it fulfils Modul 2 of the Integrationsvereinbarung, and it becomes relevant when you apply for particular upgrades: it is the German-language proof for the 'Daueraufenthalt – EU' long-term residence title and a recognised language proof for Austrian citizenship. Most people first pass the A2 exam and, some years later, prepare for B1 when permanent residence or citizenship comes into view. The exam is taken at the ÖIF and its certified partner institutes, and the fee is set by the test centre, so it varies; ask your course provider or the ÖIF for current dates and prices, and always confirm the format and pass rule against the official ÖIF materials before you book.
