The Integrationsprüfung B1 is the exam that fulfils Modul 2 of Austria’s Integrationsvereinbarung, and it is built differently from the A2 exam: instead of one pass/fail result, each part is graded to a CEFR level on its own. How many parts does the Integrationsprüfung B1 have?
Five. The language part is the Deutsch-Test für Österreich (DTÖ): Hören (listening), Lesen (reading), Schreiben (writing) and Sprechen (speaking). The fifth part, Werte- und Orientierungswissen, is a separate values and orientation knowledge test about life in Austria. All five are set and certified by the Österreichischer Integrationsfonds (ÖIF) under Prüfungsordnung 01/2024.
What does each part of the exam look like?
- Hören (listening): 20 questions.
- Lesen (reading): 25 questions.
- Schreiben (writing): one longer written text, where you choose between topic A or topic B.
- Sprechen (speaking): three parts, taken as a pair exam with another candidate.
- Werte- und Orientierungswissen (values): 18 multiple-choice questions.
What score do you need to pass?
The Deutsch-Test für Österreich is scored by CEFR level, not by a single percentage. Hören and Lesen are counted together, out of a maximum of 45 points, and reach B1 from 33 points. Schreiben is scored out of 20 points, reaching B1 from 15. Sprechen is scored out of 100 points, reaching B1 from 75.
For a full B1 certificate, Sprechen must reach B1, and at least one of Hören/Lesen or Schreiben must also reach B1. You do not need B1 in all four skills at once, though the more of them that clear the B1 threshold, the stronger your certificate. The Werte- und Orientierungswissen part is scored and passed separately, with no compensation from the language part.
How is the Werte- und Orientierungswissen part scored?
It is 18 multiple-choice questions worth 45 points in total. Nine questions offer two answer options and are worth 2 points each; the other nine offer three answer options and are worth 3 points each. Questions are drawn from seven official value areas (Wertebereiche): orientation about Austria, language and education, work and the economy, health, housing and neighbourhood, the principles of living together, and diversity in living together. You need at least 25 of the 45 points to pass this part, independent of how you scored on the language part.
What is the difference between the A2 and B1 integration exams?
The A2 exam (Modul 1) is compulsory within two years of your residence permit; the B1 exam (Modul 2) is not mandatory for every permit. B1 becomes relevant only when you apply for specific upgrades: it is the German-language proof required for the “Daueraufenthalt – EU” long-term residence title, and it is a recognised language proof for Austrian citizenship. Most people sit the A2 exam first and prepare for B1 some years later, once they need one of those two outcomes.
