The exam

What the Austrian ÖIF Integrationsprüfung B1 involves

The Integrationsprüfung B1 is the exam that fulfils Modul 2 of Austria's Integrationsvereinbarung (integration agreement). Its language part is the Deutsch-Test für Österreich (DTÖ), an ÖIF exam that certifies German at levels A2 and B1 of the Common European Framework across four skills, listening, reading, writing and speaking. It adds a Werte- und Orientierungswissen part on Austrian values and orientation knowledge, and is certified by the Österreichischer Integrationsfonds (ÖIF).

How is the ÖIF Integrationsprüfung B1 structured?

The language part is the Deutsch-Test für Österreich: Hören (listening, 20 questions), Lesen (reading, 25 questions), Schreiben (one longer text, where you choose topic A or B) and Sprechen (speaking, in three parts, as a pair exam). The values part is the Werte- und Orientierungswissen, 18 multiple-choice questions worth 45 points.

What score do you need to pass the Integrationsprüfung B1?

The Deutsch-Test für Österreich is scored by CEFR level, not a single percentage. Listening and reading are counted together out of 45 points, and 33 or more reaches B1. Writing is out of 20 (15 or more is B1) and speaking is out of 100 (75 or more is B1). For a B1 certificate the speaking part must reach B1, and at least one of listening/reading or writing must also reach B1, so you do not need B1 in all four skills. For the full Integrationsprüfung B1 you must additionally pass the values test with at least 25 of 45 points.

What is the Werte- und Orientierungswissen part?

It is an 18-question multiple-choice test on Austrian values and everyday orientation, worth 45 points, passed from 25 points. Questions 1 to 9 have two options and are worth 2 points each; questions 10 to 18 have three options and are worth 3 points each. The questions are drawn from seven official value areas (Wertebereiche), with at least one question from each, so the app practises all seven: orientation about Austria, language and education, work and the economy, health, housing and neighbourhood, the principles of living together, and diversity.

Is the Integrationsprüfung B1 compulsory, and by when?

Unlike the A2 exam (Modul 1, which has a two-year deadline), the B1 exam is not mandatory for every residence permit. It becomes relevant when you apply for particular upgrades: it is the German-language proof for the 'Daueraufenthalt – EU' long-term residence permit and a recognised language proof for Austrian citizenship. Most people first take the A2 exam and, some years later, prepare for B1.

What does the Integrationsprüfung B1 cover?

The language tasks are built around everyday and more formal life in Austria at B1 level. This app groups its practice, reading, listening and flashcards into the same everyday themes:

  • Persönliche Angaben: introducing yourself, family, appearance and character.
  • Alltag & Familie: daily routine, household, time and appointments.
  • Einkaufen & Dienstleistungen: shops, money, restaurants and services.
  • Arbeit & Bildung: jobs, applications, school and courses.
  • Wohnen & Umgebung: housing, neighbourhood, the city and transport.
  • Gesundheit: the body, the doctor, the pharmacy and emergencies.
  • Freizeit & Reisen: hobbies, travel, weather and festivals.
  • Ämter & Behörden: appointments, forms, phone calls and public services.
  • Werte- und Orientierungswissen: the seven official value areas about life in Austria.

Are these the official ÖIF questions?

No. The official Deutsch-Test für Österreich model tests and the ÖIF Werte-Fragenkatalog are not reproduced here. Every question, reading text and listening script in this app is written from scratch to match the publicly documented format and B1 level of the exam, with a clear explanation for each answer in German and English. Facts about Austria are not copyrightable, so the values questions teach the same knowledge without copying any official wording.

Why do you need the Integrationsprüfung B1?

Passing it fulfils Modul 2 of the Integrationsvereinbarung. It is the German-language requirement for the 'Daueraufenthalt – EU' permanent-residence title and a recognised proof for Austrian citizenship. It shows you have reached B1 German and understand how everyday life and the rules of living together work in Austria, which is why residents work toward it after A2.

How much does the Integrationsprüfung B1 cost and where do you take it?

The exam is taken at the ÖIF and its certified partner institutes, and the fee is set by the test centre, so it varies; ask your course provider or the ÖIF for current dates and prices. The ÖIF issues the certificate. Always confirm the format, pass rule and fee against the official ÖIF page before you book.

FAQ

Common questions

Is this the official ÖIF app?

No. This is an independent study aid. It is not affiliated with, authorised by, or endorsed by the Österreichischer Integrationsfonds (ÖIF) or the Republic of Austria. It is built to help you prepare for the Integrationsprüfung B1.

Are these the real ÖIF exam questions?

No. The official Deutsch-Test für Österreich model tests and the ÖIF Werte-Fragenkatalog are copyright-protected and are not reproduced here. Every question, text and listening script is written from scratch to match the format and B1 level of the exam, with a clear explanation for each answer.

What is the difference between the A2 and B1 integration exams?

The A2 exam (Modul 1) must usually be passed within two years of your residence permit. The B1 exam (Modul 2) is not mandatory for every permit; it is the German proof for the 'Daueraufenthalt – EU' long-term residence title and for citizenship. The B1 language part is the Deutsch-Test für Österreich, scored by CEFR band, and its content is at the higher B1 level.

How is the Integrationsprüfung B1 result decided?

The Deutsch-Test für Österreich is scored by level. Listening and reading count together out of 45 (B1 from 33), writing out of 20 (B1 from 15) and speaking out of 100 (B1 from 75). For a B1 certificate, speaking must be B1 plus at least one of listening/reading or writing; you do not need B1 in all four skills. You must also pass the values test (at least 25 of 45). The app's mock scores the combined language part and the values part separately so you see where you stand.

Does the app include the listening (Hören) part with audio?

Yes. Listening questions come with original audio recorded in Austrian German (de-AT), so you practise understanding real announcements, radio messages and dialogues, just like in the exam.

What languages are the explanations in?

The questions are in German, exactly like the real exam. Every answer is explained in German and English so you can check your understanding. You choose the explanation language in Settings.

Does the app work offline, and is it a one-time purchase?

Yes to both. Every question, explanation, audio clip, flashcard and guide is stored on your device, so you can study with no internet connection. You pay once and own the app, with no subscription; if you change devices you can restore your purchase at no extra cost.

Where do the questions come from?

Every question is original, written to match the Integrationsprüfung B1 format, with an explanation for each answer. Each item is checked by a second, independent AI model from a different family, with a human reviewing anything flagged. You can read the full process at rivermaplearning.com/how-we-build-questions.
