What the Norskprøven exam involves
Norskprøven is the official Norwegian language test for adults, owned by the Directorate for Higher Education and Skills (HK-dir) and delivered at local test centres. It has four separate subtests — reading, listening, writing and a face-to-face oral test — and each one is graded on its own and reported as a CEFR level (below A1, A1, A2, B1 or B2). There is no single combined pass or fail; you get a level for each skill. This app practises all four skills at the A2–B1 range most learners need.
What are the parts of the Norskprøven exam?
Norskprøven has four subtests, each graded separately with its own CEFR level, and this app practises all of them.
- Leseprøven (Reading): about 75 minutes, computer-based and adaptive, so the questions adjust to your level.
- Lytteprøven (Listening): about 30 to 60 minutes, computer-based; at A1–B1 each clip is played twice, at B2 once.
- Skriftlig framstilling (Writing): you choose one paper and write for about 90 to 120 minutes.
- Muntlig prøve (Oral): a face-to-face test of about 20 to 25 minutes with an examiner in the room.
What level of Norwegian do I need for permanent residence or citizenship?
For permanent residence (permanent oppholdstillatelse) you generally need oral (muntlig) Norwegian at level A2 or higher, plus a social-studies test — this rule applies to applicants aged 18–67 from 1 September 2025. For Norwegian citizenship (statsborgerskap) you generally need oral Norwegian at level B1 or higher. Both requirements are checked when you apply, not on a fixed countdown after you arrive. Always confirm the current rule on UDI's pages.
Is there a pass mark for Norskprøven?
There is no fixed number-correct pass mark. Reading and listening are marked automatically and reported as a CEFR level, while writing is rated by at least two assessors and the oral test is assessed by a rater in the room, both against CEFR criteria. Because the real test reports a level rather than a score, this app's practice mock uses its own realistic threshold over the auto-scored reading and listening skills so you can track progress.

Common questions
What level of Norwegian do I need for permanent residence in Norway?
