What the AQA GCSE Chemistry exam involves

GCSE Chemistry with AQA (specification 8462) is the single-science Chemistry GCSE, sat by most separate-science students at the Higher tier. It is assessed by two written exam papers covering ten topics, and there is no coursework. This app is built for the Higher tier and covers the whole specification, both papers, including all the chemistry-only content, so what you revise is the full range of what the exam can ask.

How many papers are in AQA GCSE Chemistry and how long are they?

There are two papers. Paper 1 and Paper 2 are each 1 hour 45 minutes long and worth 100 marks, so the GCSE is 200 marks in total. Each paper mixes multiple-choice, short-answer, calculation and extended-response questions.

  • Paper 1 (8462/1H): 1h 45m, 100 marks, topics 1 to 5
  • Paper 2 (8462/2H): 1h 45m, 100 marks, topics 6 to 10
  • Total: two papers, 200 marks, graded 4 to 9 at Higher tier

What topics are on each paper?

The ten topics are split across the two papers. Paper 1 covers the first five topics and Paper 2 covers the last five, though Paper 2 can still draw on the fundamentals of atomic structure, bonding and quantitative chemistry. This app organises its questions and flashcards by exactly these topics.

What is the Higher tier in GCSE Chemistry?

GCSE science is tiered. Higher-tier papers target grades 4 to 9 and include the harder material and the more demanding maths, such as moles, concentrations and atom economy; Foundation tier targets grades 1 to 5. About 85 percent of separate-science students sit the Higher tier. This app is written for Higher-tier students, so the questions and the calculations match that level, and Higher-only content is tagged to its specification point.

Every question is original and written to the publicly available AQA GCSE Chemistry subject content (specification 8462). No AQA exam papers, mark schemes or textbook text is copied. No. This is an independent study aid. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by AQA. It is written to align with the publicly available AQA GCSE Chemistry specification (8462), but the questions are our own.

Does it cover the whole GCSE or just one paper?

The whole GCSE. It covers all ten topics across both Paper 1 (Atomic structure, Bonding, Quantitative chemistry, Chemical changes, Energy changes) and Paper 2 (Rate and extent of chemical change, Organic chemistry, Chemical analysis, Chemistry of the atmosphere, Using resources), at Higher tier, including the chemistry-only content of the separate GCSE.

Are these real past-paper questions?

No, and that is deliberate. Every question is original and written to the public AQA subject content. We do not copy AQA past papers or mark schemes, both for copyright reasons and so you practise the ideas rather than memorising one paper. Each answer has its own explanation and cites the specification point it tests.

Is the app for Higher tier or Foundation tier?

Higher tier. The questions, the calculations and the maths are pitched at the Higher tier, which targets grades 4 to 9. Combined Science (Trilogy) students sitting Higher Chemistry will also find most of the content relevant, although the chemistry-only topics go beyond Combined Science.

How many questions and flashcards are included?

There are 672 original multiple-choice questions and 301 flashcards, close to a thousand study items in total, spread across all ten topics.

Does the app work offline?

Yes. Everything is stored on your device, so you can revise without an internet connection and there is no login or account to create.

Every question is generated to the public specification, then independently re-checked before release: a second AI model from a different family verifies every keyed answer against the AQA subject content, recomputes every calculation from scratch, and checks the distractors so that none is accidentally true.
