AQA GCSE Chemistry 8462 Higher tier: what the two papers cover, and free practice questions

How is AQA GCSE Chemistry assessed?

Two written papers, sat at the end of the course. Paper 1 and Paper 2 are each 1 hour 45 minutes long and each worth 100 marks, so the whole GCSE is 200 marks. There is no coursework. Each paper mixes multiple-choice, short answer, calculation and extended response questions, and required practical work is examinable on both.

Which topics are on Paper 1 and which are on Paper 2?

Paper 1 takes the first five topics and Paper 2 the last five. The split is less clean than it looks, because Paper 2 can still draw on the fundamentals of atomic structure, bonding and quantitative chemistry. In practice that means moles and formula mass are never off the table, whichever paper you are sitting.

What does Higher tier change in GCSE Chemistry?

Mostly the maths. Higher tier papers target grades 4 to 9 and carry the harder calculations: moles, limiting reactants, titrations, concentration in mol per dm cubed, gas volumes, atom economy and bond energy calculations. Foundation tier targets grades 1 to 5 and leaves most of that out. About 85 percent of separate science students sit Higher, and the free questions on these pages are written at that level, calculations included.

Which topics do students find hardest?

Quantitative chemistry is the reliable stumbling block, because it is the one topic where knowing the chemistry is not enough: you also have to keep units straight and show working. Chemical changes is the largest single topic and bundles three separate ideas, the reactivity series, acid reactions and electrolysis, under one heading. Organic chemistry and Chemical analysis both reward rote accuracy, the exact tests and the exact colours, which makes them the fastest topics to improve on in a short revision window.

How should you use free practice questions?

Use them to find gaps, not to score yourself. In chemistry the useful signal is which of the three wrong options tempted you, because each one is a specific misconception: a rate answer that talks about the energy of collisions instead of their frequency, an electrolysis answer that assumes the metal always forms at the cathode.
