AQA GCSE Chemistry Explained: Papers, Topics and Higher Tier

GCSE Chemistry with AQA is the single-science Chemistry GCSE, and most separate science students sit it at the Higher tier. The structure is simple to describe and easy to underestimate: two papers, ten topics, no coursework, and a mark scheme that rewards knowing which idea applies before you start writing.

How is AQA GCSE Chemistry assessed?

Two written papers, each 1 hour 45 minutes and worth 100 marks. That makes the whole GCSE 200 marks. There is no coursework and no separately assessed practical: the required practicals are examined inside the written papers.

  • Paper 1 (8462/1H): 1h 45m, 100 marks, topics 1 to 5
  • Paper 2 (8462/2H): 1h 45m, 100 marks, topics 6 to 10
  • Total: 200 marks, graded 4 to 9 at Higher tier

Each paper mixes multiple-choice, short answer, calculation and extended response questions, so the same topic can be asked in four different registers.

What topics are on each paper?

The specification splits ten topics across the two papers.

Paper 1

  1. Atomic structure and the periodic table
  2. Bonding, structure and the properties of matter
  3. Quantitative chemistry
  4. Chemical changes
  5. Energy changes

Paper 2

  1. The rate and extent of chemical change
  2. Organic chemistry
  3. Chemical analysis
  4. Chemistry of the atmosphere
  5. Using resources

The split is cleaner on paper than in the exam hall. Paper 2 is examined on topics 6 to 10, but it can still lean on the fundamentals: a rates question that needs moles, an organic question that needs bonding. Treating topics 1 to 3 as “done after Paper 1” is the most common structural mistake.

What is the Higher tier in GCSE Chemistry?

Higher tier papers target grades 4 to 9. GCSE science is tiered, and the tier a student is entered for sets the range of grades available. Higher tier includes content that Foundation tier does not, and the questions that overlap between tiers tend to appear at the demanding end of the Foundation paper and the accessible end of the Higher paper.

There is no pass mark. GCSE Chemistry is graded 1 to 9, and the grade boundaries are set each year after the papers are marked, so a fixed target mark does not exist. What you can control is coverage and accuracy.

Which topics carry the most weight?

Across the specification, the topics that reward drilling hardest are the ones with transferable machinery rather than isolated facts:

  • Quantitative chemistry turns up inside other topics constantly. Moles, concentration, yield and atom economy are the arithmetic spine of the course.
  • Chemical changes and energy changes carry a lot of Paper 1 marks and a lot of the reasoning questions.
  • Organic chemistry and chemical analysis are where Paper 2 candidates most often lose marks to imprecise naming and half-remembered test results.
  • Chemistry of the atmosphere and using resources are comparatively small, content-light and very learnable. They are the cheapest marks on Paper 2.

How should you revise for AQA GCSE Chemistry?

Work by topic, then by question type. Reading a topic note tells you whether you recognise the material; answering questions on it tells you whether you can use it, and those are different states.

Two habits that pay disproportionately at Higher tier:

  • Recompute every calculation rather than checking the answer. Quantitative chemistry marks are lost to arithmetic and to unit slips far more often than to not knowing the method.
  • Write the extended responses out. Six mark questions are marked by level rather than by point, and the difference between a level 2 and a level 3 answer is usually structure, not extra content.

The question bank is written to the public AQA GCSE Chemistry specification (8462), Higher tier subject content for both papers, published at aqa.org.uk.

Every question is original. No AQA exam paper, mark scheme or textbook text is reproduced. The specification is referenced only to align topic coverage, and scientific facts themselves are not copyrightable.

The current build is 672 original questions and 301 flashcards across all ten topics, with a topic note for each. Every calculation was recomputed and every keyed answer re-checked in an independent pass, and then a second AI model from a different family reviewed every question, flashcard, note and diagram against the subject content before release. A small number of off-specification items were removed at that stage.
