The fide test (Sprachnachweis fide) proves your German for Swiss residence permits and for naturalisation. It tests four skills in two parts: an oral part (Sprechen and Verstehen) and a written part (Lesen and Schreiben). Unlike a pass-or-fail exam, fide grades each skill to a level of the Common European Framework, so your language passport records one level for the oral part and one for the written part. The fide test is run by the fide secretariat on behalf of the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM).

How is the fide test structured?

The oral part combines Sprechen (speaking, with an examiner) and Verstehen (listening from a recording, played at most twice) and takes about 40 minutes in total. The written part, Lesen und Schreiben, takes about 60 minutes. You choose a level combination, A1–A2 or A2–B1; the test starts at A2 and the examiners can suggest a higher (B1) or lower (A1) level.

How is the fide test scored and what level do you get?

The oral level is worked out from Sprechen (two thirds) and Verstehen (one third); the written level comes from Lesen and Schreiben. You reach at least the lower level of your chosen combination to be certified, and your language passport shows one level for oral and one for written. Because speaking and writing are judged by an examiner, this app's mock scores the objectively measurable parts, Lesen and Verstehen, and shows the CEFR level you are reaching as a guide, while you practise speaking and writing with model answers and a self-check.

Which combination should you choose, A1–A2 or A2–B1?

You pick the combination that matches your target level. The A1–A2 combination suits people who need A1 or A2; the A2–B1 combination suits people aiming for A2 or B1. The written part uses different modules for each combination, with the A2 module shared between them. In the app you choose the same two combinations before the practice test.

Which German level do you need for a Swiss permit or naturalisation?

The level you need depends on your permit. As a guide: family reunification (B permit) usually needs spoken A1; the C settlement permit needs spoken A2 and written A1; an early C permit needs spoken B1 and written A1; and ordinary or simplified naturalisation needs spoken B1 and written A2. Cantons can set higher requirements, so always confirm your exact level with your canton or commune.

What does the fide test cover?

Are these the official fide questions?

No. The official fide model tests and scenario materials are copyright-protected (rights held by the SEM) and are not reproduced here. Every question, reading text, listening script and illustration in this app is written and drawn from scratch to match the publicly documented format of the fide test, with a clear explanation for each answer in German and English. Facts about Switzerland are not copyrightable.

Is the German Swiss German (de-CH)?

Yes. All content is written in Swiss Standard German (de-CH): it never uses the German eszett and always writes ss, and it uses everyday Swiss words such as Velo, Tram, Billett, Kehricht, Gemeinde, Krankenkasse and Spital. The listening audio is recorded with Swiss-German voices, so you practise understanding the German you will actually hear in the test.

How much does the fide test cost and where do you take it?

You book the fide test directly at an accredited test centre, with no obligation to take a course; the fee is set by the centre, so it varies. The result (the language passport) usually arrives after four to six weeks. The fide secretariat itself does not run preparation courses. Always confirm the current format, levels and fee on the official fide page before you book.
