How is AQA GCSE Physics assessed?
Two written papers, sat at the end of the course. Paper 1 and Paper 2 are each 1 hour 45 minutes long and each worth 100 marks, so the whole GCSE is 200 marks. There is no coursework. Each paper mixes multiple-choice, structured, closed short answer and open response questions, and required practical work is examinable on both.

Which topics are on Paper 1 and which are on Paper 2?
The eight topics split evenly, four to each paper. Forces is the largest topic on the specification and sits on Paper 2, which is why Paper 2 tends to feel heavier even though the two papers are the same length and worth the same marks.

What can you take into the AQA GCSE Physics exam?
A ruler and a scientific calculator for both papers, and a protractor as well for Paper 2. AQA supplies the Physics Equations Sheet with the paper as an insert. The sheet does not do the work for you: you still have to know what each symbol means, which equation fits the situation described, and how to rearrange it and convert the units before you substitute. What does Higher tier mean in GCSE Physics?
GCSE science is tiered. Higher tier papers target grades 4 to 9 and carry the harder material and the more demanding calculation and maths questions. Foundation tier targets grades 1 to 5, so a Foundation entry caps the grade at 5 whatever happens on the day. The free questions on these pages are written at Higher tier level, calculations included.
Where most physics marks are actually lost
Not on the physics. The recurring losses are unit conversions left undone, equations rearranged wrongly, and answers quoted without a unit at all. A mass in grams inside any energy equation makes the answer a thousand times too large, and a length in centimetres does the same to a density. None of that is difficulty, it is habit, which is the good news: it is the fastest part of a physics grade to fix.
