AQA GCSE Physics Explained: Papers, Topics and the Equations Sheet

GCSE Physics with AQA is the separate science Physics GCSE, sat by most students at the Higher tier. Two papers, eight topics, no coursework, and one feature that quietly reshapes revision: AQA hands you the equations.

How is AQA GCSE Physics assessed?

Two written papers, each 1 hour 45 minutes and worth 100 marks, making a 200 mark GCSE. There is no coursework; the required practicals are examined inside the written papers.

  • Paper 1 (8463/1H): 1h 45m, 100 marks, topics 1 to 4
  • Paper 2 (8463/2H): 1h 45m, 100 marks, topics 5 to 8
  • Total: 200 marks, graded 4 to 9 at Higher tier

Each paper mixes multiple-choice, structured, closed short answer and open response questions.

What topics are on each paper?

Paper 1

  1. Energy

Paper 2

  1. Forces
  2. Waves
  3. Magnetism and electromagnetism
  4. Space physics

Forces and waves are the two heaviest topics on Paper 2 and reward early revision. Space physics is the smallest and the most self-contained, which makes it one of the few places you can add marks quickly late in the course.

Do you get an equations sheet in GCSE Physics?

Yes. AQA supplies the Physics Equations Sheet with the paper as an insert. This is the single most misread fact about the course.

Being given the equations removes memorisation and leaves everything else:

  • Knowing what each symbol means. An equation you cannot decode is not usable.
  • Choosing the right one. Most lost marks in calculation questions come from picking a plausible equation for the wrong situation, not from failing to recall it.
  • Rearranging and unit handling. The sheet gives you the relationship in one form; the question rarely asks for it in that form.

So “the equations are given” is not a reason to skip equation practice. It is a reason to practise selection and rearrangement instead of recall. Our app carries a ninth category devoted to the equations for exactly this reason, alongside the eight specification topics.

What equipment do you need?

A ruler and a scientific calculator for both papers, and a protractor as well for Paper 2. The protractor is not decoration: Paper 2 carries the waves content, where angle measurement appears in ray diagram questions.

What is the Higher tier, and what is the pass mark?

Higher tier papers target grades 4 to 9, and there is no pass mark. GCSE Physics is graded 1 to 9, and grade boundaries are set each year once the papers have been marked, so there is no fixed score to aim at. The Higher tier paper includes physics-only content that Combined Science students do not sit.

How should you revise for AQA GCSE Physics?

Split your time by what the mark scheme actually rewards.

  • Calculations: practise selection before speed. Given a scenario, the first decision is which relationship applies; get that right and the arithmetic is routine.
  • Explanation questions: physics explanations are marked for chains of reasoning. “The current increases” earns less than “the resistance falls, so for the same potential difference the current increases”.
  • Required practicals: they are examined in the written papers, usually through method and variables rather than results. Know what was controlled and why.
  • Diagrams: circuit symbols and ray diagrams are precise. An approximate symbol is a wrong symbol.

Working topic by topic against questions, rather than re-reading notes, is what exposes the gap between recognising a topic and being able to use it.

The question bank is written to the public AQA GCSE Physics specification (8463), Higher tier subject content for both papers, published at aqa.org.uk.

Every question is original. No AQA exam paper, mark scheme or textbook text is reproduced; the specification is referenced only to align topic coverage, and scientific facts and equations are not copyrightable.
