GCSE Physics Exam: Format, Papers and Pass Mark Explained

AQA GCSE Physics (specification 8463) is assessed by two written papers rather than a single timed test, and like the other sciences, it has no pre-set pass mark. Here is what the real exam looks like, and how a practice app can still give you something to aim for.

How many questions are on the GCSE Physics exam?

The real exam is not structured as a fixed count of questions. Paper 1 and Paper 2 are each 100 marks, and each paper mixes multiple-choice, structured, closed short answer and open response items rather than a uniform list of single-mark questions. That is different from a professional licensing test with, say, 45 flat multiple-choice items: the number of discrete questions on an AQA science paper depends on how many marks each item is worth.

Is there a fixed pass mark for GCSE Physics?

No, and this is the detail most search results get wrong. GCSEs do not have a pass mark set in advance. AQA publishes grade boundaries after each exam series, once the papers have been sat and marked, and those boundaries can move slightly from year to year depending on how the cohort performs. There is no number you can memorise in June that guarantees a grade in August.

How long is the AQA GCSE Physics exam?

There are two papers, each 1 hour 45 minutes long and worth 100 marks, for 200 marks across the whole GCSE:

  • Paper 1 (8463/1H): 1h 45m, 100 marks
  • Paper 2 (8463/2H): 1h 45m, 100 marks

Both papers are Higher tier, and there is no coursework component in the current specification.

What topics are split across the two papers?

The specification groups eight topics across the two papers:

  • Paper 1 covers Energy, Electricity, Particle model of matter, and Atomic structure.
  • Paper 2 covers Forces, Waves, Magnetism and electromagnetism, and Space physics.

Energy covers energy stores and transfers, specific heat capacity, work done and power, and the national and global picture of renewable and non-renewable resources. Electricity covers current, potential difference and resistance, series and parallel circuits, the domestic supply, and the national grid. Particle model of matter covers density, the states of matter, internal energy and specific latent heat. Atomic structure covers the structure of the atom, radioactive decay, and the hazards and uses of radiation.

On Paper 2, forces covers scalars and vectors, resultant forces, moments, and the motion of objects including Newton’s laws and stopping distances. Waves covers transverse and longitudinal waves, wave speed, and the electromagnetic spectrum. Magnetism and electromagnetism covers magnetic fields, the motor effect, and the generator effect. Space physics covers the solar system, the life cycle of stars, orbits, and red-shift as evidence for an expanding universe.

What do you need to take into the exam?

You need a ruler and a scientific calculator for both papers, and a protractor as well for Paper 2. AQA supplies the Physics Equations Sheet with the paper as an insert. The sheet does not remove the work: you still have to know what each symbol means, which equation fits the situation in front of you, and how to rearrange it and convert the units before you substitute.

What is the Higher tier in GCSE Physics?

GCSE science is split into Foundation and Higher tiers. Higher-tier papers target grades 4 to 9, with an allowed grade 3 for students who narrowly miss grade 4, and carry the harder application and maths-based questions. Foundation tier covers the lower grade range with different papers.

How can I practice for the exam if there is no pass mark to aim for?
