What the German DTZ (Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer) involves

The Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer (DTZ) is the language exam at the end of the state integration course in Germany. It certifies your everyday German across four skills, listening, reading, writing and speaking, and reports your overall result at level A2 or B1 of the Common European Framework. It is developed for the Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge (BAMF) and administered by telc and g.a.s.t.

How is the DTZ structured?

The DTZ has a written part of 100 minutes covering listening (Hören) and reading (Lesen) plus a short letter (Schreiben), and an oral part of about 15 minutes (Sprechen) where you introduce yourself and talk with the examiners and another candidate. There is no separate grade per question; each skill block is reported at A2 or B1.

What level do you need, and how is the DTZ result decided?

To reach an overall B1 (or A2), you must reach that level in Speaking (Sprechen) and in at least one of the other blocks, either Listening and Reading combined or Writing. Strong reading cannot make up for weak speaking, so speaking practice matters. Below A2 you receive a result notice but no certificate.

What does the DTZ cover?

The tasks are built around the everyday communication needs of the integration course (the Goethe-Institut framework curriculum). This app groups its reading tasks and flashcards into the same everyday themes:

  • Arbeit und Beruf: job ads, workplace emails, notices, sick notes and shift plans.
  • Wohnen und Alltag: flat listings, tenancy notices, house rules and letters to the landlord.
  • Ämter und Behörden: letters and forms from public offices, appointments and registration.
  • Gesundheit und Soziales: doctors and appointments, health insurance, pharmacy notices.
  • Einkauf, Geld und Verträge: offers and receipts, bills, contracts and the bank.
  • Familie, Bildung und Freizeit: school and Kita letters, courses, clubs and leisure.

Are these the official DTZ questions?

No. The official DTZ practice materials are copyright-protected and are not reproduced here. Every task in this app is written from scratch to match the format and level of the DTZ, with a short everyday text and a clear explanation for each answer in German and English. This keeps the app fully independent of telc and g.a.s.t. while drilling the same skills.

Why do you need the DTZ?

An overall B1 result in the DTZ is required for the Zertifikat Integrationskurs and is an important step toward a settlement permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis) and naturalisation. It shows you have reached a key goal of the integration course. That is why most course participants take the DTZ at the end of the course.

How much does the DTZ cost and who takes it?

The DTZ is the final exam of the BAMF integration course, so it is normally free the first time at the end of a funded course; repeat or standalone attempts are chargeable and the fee varies by provider. It is taken at approved test centres run by telc or g.a.s.t. Always confirm dates and fees with your course provider or the BAMF.

FAQ

Common questions

Is this the official DTZ app?

No. This is an independent study aid. It is not affiliated with, authorised by, or endorsed by the BAMF, telc gGmbH, g.a.s.t. or the Goethe-Institut. It is built to help you prepare for the Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer.

Are these the real DTZ exam questions?

No. The official DTZ materials are copyright-protected and are not reproduced here. Every reading task in the app is written from scratch to match the format and level of the DTZ, with a short everyday text and a clear explanation for each answer.

Does the app include the listening (Hören) part with audio?

Not in this first version. It covers the reading tasks (Lesen), the exam letter (Schreiben) with model letters, and preparation for the speaking test (Sprechen), plus flashcards. A listening module with audio is planned for a later update.

How is the overall DTZ result decided?

Your result is reported at A2 or B1. For an overall B1 you must reach B1 in Speaking (Sprechen) and in at least one of the other blocks, either Listening and Reading combined or Writing. That is why the app puts real weight on speaking and writing preparation, not only reading.

What languages are the explanations in?

The tasks are in German, exactly like the real exam. Every answer is explained in German and English so you can check your understanding. You choose the explanation language in Settings.

Does the app work offline?

Yes. Every task, explanation, flashcard and guide is stored on your device, so you can study with no internet connection after you download the app.

Is it a one-time purchase?

Yes. You pay once and own the app, with no subscription. If you change devices you can restore your purchase at no extra cost.

Will this app guarantee I pass the DTZ?

No app can guarantee a pass. The DTZ also tests listening and a live speaking exam, which depend on practice with real German. This app builds the reading, writing and speaking-preparation skills that make the biggest difference, and you should use it alongside your integration course.

Where do the questions come from?

Every task is original, written to match the DTZ format, with an explanation for each answer. Each item is checked by a second, independent AI model from a different family, with a human reviewing anything flagged. You can read the full process at rivermaplearning.com/how-we-build-questions.
