Manitoba Security Guard Exam: Format, Pass Mark, and What to Expect

Knowing the structure of the Manitoba security guard licensing exam before you start studying helps you allocate your time across the right topics. This page covers exactly what the province has confirmed: the pass mark, the exam format, the cost, and the 10 modules drawn from the official training manual.

What is the pass mark for the Manitoba security guard exam?

75% or higher. This is set in Manitoba law: the Private Investigators and Security Guards Regulation (Manitoba Regulation 164/2010) requires a grade of 75% or higher on the examination established by the Registrar. You must clear this threshold to receive your licence.

How many questions are on the exam, and how long is it?

Manitoba does not publish the official question count or a time limit for the licensing exam. What the province has confirmed:

  • The exam is multiple choice
  • It is delivered online and e-proctored by E-proctor
  • The $30 exam fee is paid directly to E-proctor when you schedule

The practice mock in the app uses a timed 60-question format to give you realistic rehearsal, but treat that as a training benchmark rather than the official exam length.

What happens if you do not pass?

You get three attempts to pass the security guard licensing exam. If you do not pass within those three tries, you must complete the full 40-hour training course again before you can sit the exam. There is also a zero-tolerance policy for any breach of exam conditions.

What topics does the exam cover?

The licensing exam draws from the 10 modules of the Manitoba Security Guard Training Program Participant’s Manual, published by Manitoba Justice. The official training program covers each module in equal depth:

  1. General Duties and Responsibilities: protecting people, property, and information; post orders and standard procedures
  2. Professionalism: appearance, conduct, communication, handling difficult people, crowds, and media
  3. You and the Law: legal status, powers of arrest, use of force, search and seizure, trespass, and licensing under the Private Investigators and Security Guards Act
  4. Patrolling: purpose, preparation, effective patrol technique, and powers of observation
  5. Writing Notes and Reports: note-taking, the 24-hour clock, the phonetic alphabet, report writing, evidence handling, and testifying
  6. Bomb Threats: handling a threat call, the bomb threat checklist, evacuation procedures, and searching
  7. Access Control and Alarm Systems: ID and key control, types of alarm systems, and appropriate responses
  8. Traffic Control: authority to direct traffic, hand signals, safe positioning, and high-visibility equipment
  9. Fire: the fire triangle, classes of fire, extinguisher types, and the PASS method
  10. Working Safely: Workplace Safety and Health Act rights, WHMIS symbols, and Working Alone Plans

The full Participant’s Manual is publicly available from Manitoba Justice under the OpenMB Information and Data Use Licence.

What are the prerequisites before you can sit the exam?

Before taking the licensing exam, you must complete the 40-hour Manitoba Security Guard Training Program through an approved training provider. Once you finish the course, your provider registers you for the e-proctored online exam and you pay the $30 fee to E-proctor at scheduling.
