Anyone preparing for the Gefahrgutbeauftragte exam quickly hits the same question: how many questions, how long, and what score do you need. The Gefahrgutbeauftragtenverordnung (GbV) answers only one of those directly, and leaves the rest to the chamber.
How many questions are on the Gefahrgutbeauftragte exam?
There is no nationally fixed number. GbV § 7 (2) delegates the details of the examination procedure, “Einzelheiten nach Absatz 1 regeln die Industrie- und Handelskammern durch Satzung”, meaning question count and time limit are set by each responsible Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) in its own statute. A candidate registering with one chamber can face a different paper length than a candidate registering with another. Because of this, RiverMap Learning’s own practice mock uses a fixed 40 questions with a 60 minute time limit as its own study setting, not a reproduction of any particular chamber’s exam.
What is the pass mark for the Gefahrgutbeauftragte exam?
At least 50 percent of the Höchstpunktzahl, the maximum attainable score, under GbV § 6 (2). This is the one number in the whole examination procedure that the regulation fixes nationwide: wherever a candidate sits the exam, the pass threshold is the same 50 percent. What differs by chamber is only the maximum score itself and how many questions it is spread across, not the percentage needed to pass.
Who decides the exact exam format?
The Industrie- und Handelskammer (IHK) responsible for the region where the candidate registers. GbV § 7 (2) hands the “Einzelheiten,” the operational details of the exam, to each chamber’s own Satzung. That covers things like question count, time allowed, and the exact administration of the sitting. It does not touch the pass mark, which stays fixed by the regulation itself regardless of chamber.
Where do the real exam questions come from?
GbV § 6 (5) states that exam questions are selected from a collection published by the DIHK, the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce. Neither this article nor RiverMap Learning’s practice app reproduces that collection. The app’s 910 practice questions are written independently from the underlying regulations: the Gefahrgutbeauftragtenverordnung, GGVSEB, and GGVSee.
Can the exam be retaken if I fail?
Yes, with two different rules depending on which exam it is. The exam taken after completing training can be retaken once without repeating the training itself. The separate renewal exam, sat to extend an existing training certificate, can be retaken without limit, but only up to the point where the certificate’s validity period runs out; for that renewal sitting the maximum score is reduced by 50 percent.
What does the exam actually cover?
Even though the format varies by chamber, the subject matter does not. The GbV and its related ordinances, GGVSEB for road, rail, and inland waterway transport and GGVSee for sea transport, set out who must appoint a Gefahrgutbeauftragter, what duties that person carries, which authorities are responsible, and the special rules that apply per mode of transport. Whatever length paper a chamber sets, it draws from this same legal foundation, which is why practicing against the statutes themselves, rather than against any one chamber’s paper, is the more reliable preparation.
