B2 English

What B2 English involves, and why it matters for ILR

B2 is the upper-intermediate level of the Common European Framework (CEFR). At B2 you can follow everyday British speech, read letters and official documents, and hold your own at work, at the GP or at the Job Centre. Under the UK government’s 2025 immigration white paper, the English requirement for settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain) is set to rise from B1 to B2 for main applicants. The rules are still being phased in, so always check the current requirement for your own route on gov.uk.

How do you prove B2 English for UK immigration?

For visa and settlement applications, English is proven through an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) taken at an approved centre, or through an accepted degree or nationality exemption. Which test and which skills you need depends on your route — confirm the exact requirement on gov.uk before booking anything.

How does B2Ready help you get there?

B2Ready starts with a free 10-minute level assessment based on Cambridge B2 First standards, with no login needed, so you know where you stand today. Then you build up with practice grounded in real UK life:
