What the Australian citizenship test involves

The Australian citizenship test is a computer-based, multiple-choice exam that most applicants aged 18-59 must pass before their citizenship application can be approved. It checks your knowledge of Australia, its people, its democratic beliefs, its system of government and law, and the shared values set out in the official study booklet, Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond.

What is the pass mark, and how long is the test?

You answer 20 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes. To pass you need at least 15 correct answers, a mark of 75%. Five of the 20 questions cover Australian values, and there is a strict rule attached to them: you must answer all five values questions correctly, no matter how well you score elsewhere. A 19/20 result still fails if one of those five is wrong.

What topics does the test cover?

Every question in the test comes from one of the four parts of the testable section of Our Common Bond:

  • Australia and its people: geography, history, symbols and significant days.
  • Australia's democratic beliefs, rights and liberties: freedoms, equality and responsibilities of citizenship.
  • Government and the law in Australia: how Australia is governed, voting and the legal system.
  • Australian values: the values section every applicant must answer perfectly.

The app organises all of its practice content along these same four parts, so your study maps one-to-one onto the real exam, and it gives the values questions the extra weight they deserve.
