How is AQA GCSE Biology assessed?
Two written papers, sat at the end of the course. Paper 1 and Paper 2 are each 1 hour 45 minutes long and each worth 100 marks, so the whole GCSE is 200 marks. There is no coursework and no non-exam assessment. Each paper mixes multiple-choice, short answer, calculation and extended response questions, and both papers can ask about the required practical work you did in class.

Which topics are on Paper 1 and which are on Paper 2?
The seven topics split cleanly: Paper 1 takes the first four, Paper 2 takes the last three. That split matters when you plan revision, because a week spent on ecology does nothing for Paper 1. It is also why a question bank organised by topic is more useful than one long shuffled list: you can revise exactly the four topics standing between you and the paper you sit first.

What does Higher tier mean in GCSE Biology?
GCSE science is tiered. Higher tier papers target grades 4 to 9 and carry the harder material and the more demanding application and maths questions. Foundation tier targets grades 1 to 5, so a student entered for Foundation cannot be awarded above a grade 5 no matter how well the paper goes. About 85 percent of separate science students sit the Higher tier, and the free questions on these pages are written at that level.
Which topics carry the most content?
Organisation and Inheritance, variation and evolution are the two heaviest topics by volume of specification content, and they are also the two students most often report running out of time on. Cell biology and Bioenergetics are smaller but sit under everything else: microscopy, transport across membranes and the two energy equations reappear inside questions that are nominally about other topics. Ecology looks like the easiest topic to leave until last and is the most common reason for a thin Paper 2.

How should you use free practice questions?
Not as a test. Multiple choice practice is most useful when you treat every wrong option as a question in its own right, because the wrong options in a well written question are the exact misconceptions the examiner is looking for. Read the explanation even when you get it right, and if you cannot say in one sentence why each of the other three options is wrong, that topic is not finished.
