AQA GCSE Biology (specification 8461) is a single-science GCSE assessed by two written exam papers rather than one sitting, split across seven topics, with separate Higher and Foundation tiers. Here is how the pieces fit together.
What exam board sets GCSE Biology?
Several exam boards run their own GCSE Biology specification in England, and AQA’s version, specification code 8461, is one of the most widely taken. This app is written to that specification, so its topic list and paper structure match what AQA actually examines.
How is the exam structured?
It is two written papers, not one combined test:
- Paper 1 (84611H): 1 hour 45 minutes, 100 marks, covering topics 1 to 4.
- Paper 2 (84612H): 1 hour 45 minutes, 100 marks, covering topics 5 to 7.
That is 200 marks in total across the GCSE, and there is no coursework in the current specification. Each paper mixes multiple-choice, short-answer, calculation and extended-response questions rather than a uniform list of single-mark items.
What are the seven topics?
The specification splits biology into seven topics, four on Paper 1 and three on Paper 2:
- Cell biology: cell structure, microscopy and magnification, mitosis and the cell cycle, stem cells, and transport into and out of cells by diffusion, osmosis and active transport.
- Organisation: cells to tissues to organs to systems, the digestive system and enzymes, the heart and blood, coronary heart disease and cancer, and plant tissues.
- Infection and response: pathogens and communicable disease, the body’s defence systems, vaccination, antibiotics, and monoclonal antibodies.
- Bioenergetics: photosynthesis as an endothermic reaction, limiting factors, and aerobic and anaerobic respiration.
- Homeostasis and response: negative feedback, the nervous system, the endocrine system, blood glucose control and diabetes, the kidney, and plant hormones.
- Inheritance, variation and evolution: reproduction and meiosis, DNA and genes, genetic inheritance, natural selection, selective breeding and genetic engineering.
- Ecology: communities, abiotic and biotic factors, the carbon and water cycles, biodiversity, and food security.
Paper 1 covers cell biology, organisation, infection and response, and bioenergetics. Paper 2 covers homeostasis and response, inheritance variation and evolution, and ecology.
Higher tier or Foundation tier: what is the difference?
GCSE science is tiered. Higher tier targets grades 4 to 9 and includes the harder application and maths-based questions; Foundation tier targets a lower grade range with separate, easier papers. Roughly 85 percent of separate-science students sit the Higher tier, and it is what this app is built for, so its questions and calculations are pitched at that level.
Is there a fixed pass mark?
No. GCSEs are graded on a 9-to-1 scale using grade boundaries that AQA sets after each exam series has been sat and marked, not a fixed percentage agreed in advance. That is different from a licensing exam with a set pass score: the boundary for each grade can move slightly year to year depending on how the national cohort performs.
