The word family of working life

The questions in this theme sort out the vocabulary of getting and doing a job. When you want work at a company, you send eine Bewerbung, an application, with invoices, invitations and parcels as the wrong options. After school, many people do eine Ausbildung, an apprenticeship or vocational training for a trade, often split between a firm and a vocational school. To get to know a profession first, you do ein Praktikum, a short internship at a company. A business itself is eine Firma, another word for Betrieb or Unternehmen, and the exam enjoys tempting you with sound-alikes such as Familie or Formular. School life supplies its own pair: der Stundenplan is the plan showing which subjects pupils have and when, while der Fahrplan, the classic distractor, is a timetable for buses and trains, and der Lebenslauf, the CV, belongs back in the application. Even professions are tested concretely: the Installateur is the plumber who repairs water pipes and sinks, kept apart from the electrician, the mechanic and the gardener.

Grammar and the rest of the exam

Like the other everyday themes, Arbeit und Bildung doubles as grammar practice. Completion items check modal verbs, 'Ich ___ heute länger arbeiten' takes muss, the ich-form of müssen, and prepositions, 'Ich arbeite ___ einem Büro' takes in, because arbeiten with a room uses in. These are exactly the structures the writing task rewards, since the one email or letter you write in 25 minutes is often about everyday arrangements such as work, appointments or courses, and the speaking test of about 10 minutes reliably touches your job or your plans. The theme also feeds the values test from a different angle: the Werte area Arbeit und Wirtschaft covers your rights at work, while this language theme gives you the words to talk about it. Study them together and the same session earns points in practice questions, writing, speaking and the values part at once. The free questions below sample the full range, from the Bewerbung to the Stundenplan, each with an explanation in German and English.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does the Arbeit und Bildung theme cover on the ÖIF Integrationsprüfung A2?

It covers the everyday German of jobs, applications, school and courses: words like Bewerbung, Ausbildung, Praktikum, Firma and Stundenplan, professions such as the Installateur, and the A2 grammar used to talk about work. It is one of the everyday themes the language part of the exam is built around.

What is the difference between Bewerbung, Ausbildung and Praktikum?

Die Bewerbung is the application you send to a company when you want a job there. Die Ausbildung is vocational training for a trade, often done after school at a firm and a vocational school. Das Praktikum is a short internship to get to know a profession. The Integrationsprüfung A2 tests all three as separate vocabulary items.

Why does the exam confuse Stundenplan and Fahrplan?

Because they are the classic A2 look-alike pair: der Stundenplan shows which subjects pupils have and when at school, while der Fahrplan is the timetable for buses and trains. The ÖIF practice questions put them side by side precisely so you learn to keep them apart before exam day.

Does this theme help with the writing and speaking parts of the Integrationsprüfung A2?

Yes, directly. The writing task is one email or letter in 25 minutes, often about everyday arrangements like work or courses, and the speaking test of about 10 minutes reliably touches your job and plans. Writing needs at least 10 of 20 points and speaking at least 15 of 30, each passed on its own.

How does Arbeit und Bildung relate to the Werte area Arbeit und Wirtschaft?

They are two sides of the same subject on the ÖIF Integrationsprüfung A2. This language theme gives you the vocabulary of jobs, applications and training, while the values area Arbeit und Wirtschaft tests your rights and duties at work, such as paid holiday and the work contract. Studying them together is the efficient route.
