The BKF beschleunigte Grundqualifikation is the accelerated route to Germany’s mandatory basic qualification for professional goods-vehicle drivers. Here is what the governing regulation actually says about it, and where the widely repeated numbers around it come from.
What is the BKF beschleunigte Grundqualifikation?
It is the fast-track basic qualification required to work as a professional driver of goods vehicles in classes C1, C1E, C, and CE, set out in the Berufskraftfahrerqualifikationsgesetz (BKrFQG) and its implementing ordinance, the BKrFQV. Instead of completing the full basic-qualification training course, a candidate sits a written exam covering the same knowledge areas. The qualification is separate from the driving licence itself: it certifies professional competence to work as a Berufskraftfahrer, not the ability to drive the vehicle.
How long is the exam, and how many questions does it have?
The written exam runs 90 minutes, fixed directly by § 2 Absatz 6 BKrFQV. That duration is the one number in this exam that is genuinely statutory.
The question count is not. The regulation says only that the paper must include at least one question for each applicable objective named in Anlage 1, the “Liste der Kenntnisbereiche”. It fixes no total. A commonly repeated figure of 30 questions circulates in study material, but it does not appear in the text of BKrFQV. The actual paper is assembled by the competent Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK), and the count can differ between chambers.
What score do you need to pass?
BKrFQV names no percentage. § 2 Absatz 9 requires only “mindestens ausreichende Leistungen”, at least sufficient performance, without stating a scale. A figure of 60 percent is repeated in some places online, but it is not written into the regulation either; the actual marking is left to the competent chamber. Anyone preparing should treat both the question count and the pass mark as chamber practice rather than statutory fact, and the 90 minutes as the one number worth relying on.
What topics are examined?
Anlage 1 groups the syllabus into three Kenntnisbereiche:
- Rationelles Fahrverhalten auf Grundlage der Sicherheitsregeln: efficient, safety-based driving behaviour, covering safety equipment and braking systems, fuel consumption, behaviour in hazardous situations, and securing the load.
- Anwendung der Vorschriften: applying the rules that govern the job, from driving and rest times and the tachograph to working-time law and the regulations specific to goods transport.
- Gesundheit, Verkehrs- und Umweltsicherheit, Dienstleistung, Logistik: accident risk and how to act at an accident scene, fitness to drive and alcohol, and the economic environment goods transport operates in.
Anlage 1 lists 18 objectives in total. Four apply only to passenger transport (classes D1, D1E, D, DE) and are out of scope for a goods-transport qualification, leaving 14 relevant to BKF. Of those 14, four (kinematic chain, crime and smuggling, ergonomics, and company image) have no substantive German statute behind them: they describe engineering or workplace-culture topics rather than legal rules, so no legally grounded question can be written from them.
Can you sit the exam in a language other than German?
Yes. German is the default, but § 2 Absatz 8 BKrFQV lists nine alternatives: Albanian, English, High Arabic, Croatian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Turkish, and Ukrainian. Whether a particular chamber offers the exam in your preferred language is worth confirming before you register.
How is this different from studying with an official question bank?
There isn’t one you can practise against directly. A DIHK question pool for this qualification exists, but reprinting it requires written permission and it carries no published answer key, which makes it unusable as a self-study tool on its own.
