What B2 English involves, and why it matters for ILR
B2 is the upper-intermediate level of the Common European Framework (CEFR). At B2 you can follow everyday British speech, read letters and official documents, and hold your own at work, at the GP or at the Job Centre. The rise from B1 to B2 for settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain) is no longer a proposal: it is written into the Immigration Rules and applies where the date of application is on or after 26 March 2027, unless an exemption or another accepted proof applies. Applications made before that date still sit at B1. Always check the current requirement for your own route on gov.uk.
How do you prove B2 English for UK immigration?
For visa and settlement applications, English is proven through an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) taken at an approved centre, or through an accepted degree or nationality exemption. Built from The Immigration Rules, which set the B2 speaking and listening requirement for settlement from 26 March 2027 (Appendix Settlement Family Life SETF 5.1, Appendix Long Residence LR 13.1, Appendix UK Ancestry UKA 15.1, Appendix Skilled Worker), with the approved-test list in the GOV.UK Secure English Language Test guidance (Immigration Rules as in force in September 2026, with the GOV.UK SELT guidance as published on 28 August 2026), the official public source, used under Open Government Licence v3.0 for the GOV.UK material. - 2026-10-08 The FAQ answer on B2 for settlement brought in line with the rest of this page. It had still described the change as a plan, and now gives the date set in the Immigration Rules, 26 March 2027.

Features that version 2.0 does not include were removed from this page, and the vocabulary topics now match the app's 12 categories.
- 2026-09-20 Source and accuracy block added, and the central fact on this page corrected. The page had described the rise from B1 to B2 for settlement as a 2025 white paper proposal still being phased in. It is enacted. The date is stated in the Immigration Rules themselves, in the same words in each settlement route: Appendix Settlement Family Life SETF 5.1 and SETF 15.1, Appendix Long Residence LR 13.1, and Appendix UK Ancestry UKA 15.1 and UKA 34.1. Each says the applicant must show speaking and listening at level B1 where the date of application is before 26 March 2027, or at level B2 where it is on or after that date, unless an exemption applies. Appendix Skilled Worker carries the same split. The Home Office announcement of 5 March 2026 says the same thing in plain words: the change was made by an Immigration Rules change on 5 March 2026 and comes into effect in March 2027, with a full year's notice.
