What the GKI exam involves

GKI (gépkocsivezetői alapképesítés) is the Hungarian initial qualification for professional drivers, the Hungarian form of the EU Driver CPC. A driver who drives a vehicle in categories C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D or DE on public roads needs it, under § 33/A of GKM decree 24/2005.

How many questions are on the GKI exam, and how long do you get?

Each multiple-choice subject is a 40-question computer-based test lasting 40 minutes, and a pass needs at least 30 of the 40 points. The format is set out in chapter VII of the curriculum and examination requirements (tantervi és vizsgakövetelmény) issued by the ministry on 11 March 2025.

Which three GKI subjects does this app cover?

The three multiple-choice subjects, practised one at a time:

  • BSZAVSZ, rational driving based on safety rules: 111 questions on roadside technical inspection, vehicle dimensions and weights, speed limiters and the EU training requirements.
  • EKKKBSZLSZ, health, road and environmental safety, service and logistics: 120 questions on driving licences and medical fitness, the road haulage market, bus and coach passenger rights and load distribution.
  • EASZ, application of the regulations: 112 questions on driving and rest times and the rules of the initial and periodic driver qualification.

Who has to take the initial qualification?

A driver who obtained a D1, D1E, D or DE licence after 9 September 2008, or a C1, C1E, C or CE licence after 9 September 2009, under § 33/B (1) of GKM decree 24/2005.

How long is the qualification valid?

Five years from the date it is obtained. After that the driver attends periodic training every five years, under § 33/C (2) of GKM decree 24/2005.

What is not covered?

The app practises the three multiple-choice subjects only. It leaves out, and says so in the app:

  • The bus and lorry top-up subjects (DKIEGSZ, CKIEGSZ).
  • The written case study (ET).
  • The practical tests: driving in traffic and special driving techniques.

How does the mock exam compare with the real one?

Same format for each subject: 40 questions, 40 minutes, a pass at 30 of 40. The mock questions are RiverMap Learning's own, not exam questions. Questions and explanations are in Hungarian, as on the exam.
