The TCF IRN does not work like a typical multiple-choice licensing exam with one overall score. It is four separately assessed tests, and instead of a single pass mark, each test places you on the Common European Framework (CEFR) scale.
How many parts does the TCF IRN have?
The TCF IRN has four mandatory tests: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, written expression and oral expression. All four are required for the intégration, résidence and nationalité pathways; there is no shorter version that skips a skill. Listening and reading are multiple choice (QCM), while writing has three tasks and speaking is a three-part interview.
How many questions are on the TCF IRN, and how long does it take?
- Listening comprehension: multiple choice, around 25 questions, about 20 minutes.
- Reading comprehension: multiple choice, around 25 questions, about 35 minutes.
- Written expression: three tasks, about 30 minutes total.
- Oral expression: a three-part speaking interview, about 10 to 12 minutes.
Because writing and speaking are judged on task performance rather than counted right and wrong answers, only the two multiple-choice tests have a meaningful “question count.”
What is the pass mark for the TCF IRN?
There isn’t one, in the usual sense. Instead of a percentage cutoff, your performance on each test is placed on the CEFR scale, from A1 to B2. The level you actually need depends on which step you are applying for: roughly A2 for some residence permits, B1 for the carte de résident, and B2 for naturalisation. A test-taker aiming for a residence permit and one aiming for naturalisation can sit the exact same TCF IRN and need very different results, so “passing” only makes sense relative to your specific application.
Why does the TCF IRN matter now?
Since 1 January 2026, a set French level has been required for several immigration and nationality steps in France, and the TCF IRN is one of the tests accepted to prove it. It is designed and delivered by France Éducation international (FEI), the public operator under France’s education ministry.
How long is the result valid?
The attestation de résultats is valid for two years from the date you sit the test. If your application is delayed past that window, you would need to sit the TCF IRN again.
What does the TCF IRN actually cover?
The tasks draw on everyday, practical French rather than literature or formal grammar drills: daily life, work and studies, housing and services, health and social life, administration and citizenship, society and culture, and travel and leisure. Preparing across all seven of these themes matters more than memorising grammar rules in isolation, since the exam tests understanding and production in realistic situations.
