How to Pass the Louisiana Cosmetology Law Exam

The material for the Louisiana cosmetology law exam is one public document: the Goldbook. This plan breaks that document into five categories and an order of attack.

What score do I need to pass the Louisiana cosmetology law exam?

We could not find a pass mark in the Goldbook or the board’s rules, so confirm it with the Louisiana State Board of Cosmetology. This app’s 40 question mock passes you at 30 correct answers, which leaves room for 10 misses. This app’s source material does not record an official question count or time limit, so treat the 40 questions and 60 minutes as a practice format only.

What do I actually have to study?

You study the Goldbook, the board’s combined name for two public sources:

  • The Louisiana Cosmetology Act, R.S. 37:561 et seq.
  • The board’s rules in the Louisiana Administrative Code, Title 46, Part XXXI

Both are public domain government edicts. The board publishes the Goldbook at lsbc.louisiana.gov. Read it once for shape, then switch to question practice, because practice questions drill recall of specific provisions.

Which topics should I study first?

Start with salon and school establishment requirements, the biggest block in this app’s mock at 9 of 40 questions. It covers opening and running salons and schools, certified floor plans, course curricula, required equipment, booth rental and mobile salons. Mobile salons, for example, must meet local zoning rules at each stop.

The other four categories are close behind:

  • The Cosmetology Act (8 of 40): the law’s purpose, definitions, the board’s powers, unlawful practice, enforcement and penalties.
  • Rules and Regulations (8 of 40): code definitions, special and temporary permits, disciplinary proceedings and declaratory orders. One example: the board must rule within 30 days after a declaratory order hearing.
  • Licensing and Renewal (8 of 40): qualifications, examinations, temporary registration, reciprocity, renewal and fees. Fee questions are pure memorization, such as the $25 duplicate license fee.
  • Sanitation and Infection Control (7 of 40): disinfecting tools, disposable equipment, prohibited services and inspections.

How should I use practice questions and flashcards?

Use questions to find gaps and flashcards to close them. The app holds 1,000 questions and 588 flashcards, each tied to a Goldbook citation such as R.S. 37:599 or LAC 46:XXXI.701. When you miss a question, read the explanation, open the cited section if it still feels unclear, then move on.

Do not memorize answer letters. Question wording changes, and the provision stays the same.

When should I take full mock exams?

Take mocks after you have covered all five categories once. A mock draws 40 questions across the categories using the weights above, runs 60 minutes and passes you at 30 correct.

Treat a result below 30 as a map, not a verdict. Check which category cost you the most points, spend your next two sessions there, then sit another mock. When you clear 30 on several mocks in a row, you are ready.

What does it cost to retake?

The Goldbook fee schedule lists $25 for the theory examination and $25 for a retake of any examination. A failed attempt costs a fee and a new sitting, so a solid study plan saves both money and time.

The free tier of the app lets you try practice questions in every category before you decide to unlock the full bank.
