AQA GCSE Computer Science (specification 8525) is assessed by two written papers rather than a single timed test, and like the other AQA sciences, it has no pre-set pass mark. Here is what the real exam looks like, and how a practice app can still give you something to aim for.
How many questions are on the GCSE Computer Science exam?
The real exam is not structured as a fixed count of questions. Paper 1 and Paper 2 are each 90 marks, and each paper mixes multiple-choice, short-answer and longer-answer items rather than a uniform list of single-mark questions. On Paper 1 each question also states what form the answer must take, for example program code, pseudo-code or a flowchart. That is different from a professional licensing test with, say, 45 flat multiple-choice items: the number of discrete questions on an AQA paper depends on how many marks each item carries.
Is there a fixed pass mark for GCSE Computer Science?
No, and this is the detail most search results get wrong. GCSEs do not have a pass mark set in advance. AQA publishes grade boundaries after each exam series, once the papers have been sat and marked, and those boundaries can move slightly from year to year depending on how the cohort performs. There is no number you can memorise in June that guarantees a grade in August.

How long is the AQA GCSE Computer Science exam?
There are two papers, for 180 marks across the whole GCSE:
- Paper 1 (8525/1): Computational thinking and programming skills. 2 hours, 90 marks, 50% of the GCSE. It directly assesses section 3.1 Fundamentals of algorithms and section 3.2 Programming.
- Paper 2 (8525/2): Computing concepts. 1 hour 45 minutes, 90 marks, 50% of the GCSE. It directly assesses sections 3.3 through 3.8, from data representation to ethical, legal and environmental impacts.
Either paper can also ask synoptic questions that need knowledge from elsewhere in the specification, so the two papers are not entirely watertight in what they draw on.
Is GCSE Computer Science tiered like GCSE Science?
No. Unlike GCSE Biology, Chemistry or Physics, there is no Foundation tier and no Higher tier. Every student sits the same Paper 2 and is graded on the same 9 to 1 scale. Paper 1 is the exception in a different sense: it comes in separate C#, Python and VB.NET variants, and you sit whichever one your school taught and entered you for. Where a question allows pseudo-code, you can use any clear and sensible format; you do not have to use AQA’s own pseudo-code style, although questions are often written in it.
Is there any coursework in GCSE Computer Science?
No. The whole grade comes from the two written papers, and there is no non-exam assessment counting towards it. Your school is still required to give you practical programming experience during the course, since you cannot write real code convincingly without having done it, but that practical work itself is not marked for the GCSE.
