B1 Ready Explained: GESE Grade 5 (B1) English Test

B1 Ready is an independent practice app built around the Trinity GESE Grade 5 exam, the spoken English test that proves CEFR level B1 for UK settlement and citizenship applications. It pairs a plain-English exam guide with vocabulary flashcards and model conversations for spoken practice, all usable offline.

What is the Trinity GESE Grade 5 exam?

GESE Grade 5 is a one-to-one speaking and listening exam from Trinity College London, set at CEFR level B1. You sit it with a Trinity examiner, either face to face or remotely, and the whole exam takes about 10 minutes. It is one of the Secure English Language Tests (SELT) accepted for UK settlement, known as indefinite leave to remain, and for citizenship applications where B1 English is the required level.

How is the exam structured?

The exam has two phases, each lasting around 5 minutes. In the Topic Phase, you choose your own subject in advance, prepare notes on a Topic Form, and present it while the examiner asks follow-up questions. This is the part of the exam a candidate controls most, since the subject and the preparation are both their own choice. In the Conversation Phase, the examiner instead picks two subject areas at random from Trinity’s official list and holds a conversation with you about them.

What are the official Conversation Phase subject areas?

Trinity limits the Conversation Phase to six official subject areas: Festivals, Means of transport, Special occasions, Entertainment, Music, and Recent personal experiences. Only these six can come up in that phase, so preparing vocabulary and ideas across all six is worth more than guessing which two the examiner will choose. The Topic Phase subject is different: candidates are told to pick something outside this list for their own prepared topic.

What does B1 Ready cover?

B1 Ready organises its content into 12 topic areas rather than only the official six, because a candidate also needs a strong self-chosen subject for the Topic Phase. The six official Conversation Phase areas sit alongside six more topics that make good Topic Phase choices: Work & Jobs, Specific Sports, Specific Hobbies & Skills, Specific Trips, Hometown & Living, and Famous People. Each of the 12 topics comes with its own vocabulary set and model conversations, so a candidate can prepare the official areas for Phase 2 and build a strong personal subject for Phase 1 in the same app.

What does the app actually contain?

The content is built from three parts. The exam guide explains the format, the two phases and the official subject areas in plain English. The vocabulary library holds 2,400 flashcards spread across the 12 topics, each with a definition, an example sentence and a Chinese meaning. The shadowing library holds 78 model conversations, which a learner slows down, listens to and repeats line by line to build spoken fluency rather than memorised answers. There is no multiple-choice question bank, because Grade 5 has no written paper to test.

What is free, and what costs money?

The exam guide and all 2,400 vocabulary flashcards are free, along with the first shadowing lesson in each of the 12 topics. A single one-time purchase unlocks the remaining shadowing conversations. There is no subscription and no account is required; everything, including progress, stays on the device.

Who is B1 Ready for?

B1 Ready suits anyone booked into, or preparing to book, a Trinity GESE Grade 5 exam for a UK settlement or citizenship application. Because the exam rewards natural spoken fluency over memorised scripts, repeated shadowing practice across the topics that can actually come up, both the six official Conversation Phase areas and a strong self-chosen Topic Phase subject, is the most direct way to prepare between now and exam day.
